According to Sergo Beria, both his father and Stalin initially hoped that supporting Israel would bring "international Jewish finance capital" to the support of the USSR, which would be more advantageous than having the Arabs on their side. Beria Sr., according to his son, did not care what kind of system Israel had as long as it was pro-Soviet.
