It was pretty early on. I moved to Russia in 2000, after the crisis, and had visions in my head of Russia being a land of immense poverty that would make Congo look good. I recollect walking through downtown Moscow and thinking, "wow, these people don't look poor at all."
And then there was the realization that I actually knew fuck-all about Chechnya. For instance, I had no idea that either the invasion of Dagestan or the kidnap industry had ever occured. I had silly visions in my head of evil unprovoked Russian Imperialism (TM).
I was a gullible idiot.
