[lbo-talk] The raids against immigrant workers

Julio, those meat packing workers were deported only because Swift had helped organize a nice identity theft ring. It's not because they're mostly Mexican or because ICE is really interested in deporting large numbers of illegal workers. They demonstrably are not interested in deporting large numbers of illegal workers. Now of course Swift Meats is probably not going to be charged for their part in the conspiracy, but that's expected. What's important is that these workers remain vulnerable. With good identity papers, they could lead normal lives. They could have the rights of citizens. Our government and American capital do not want that. They want vulnerable, cheap labor without documents for the same reason pimps steal the passports of women they force into sex slavery: people without good documents are vulnerable.

How can undocumented workers organize to change their status?

Can they vote? No.

They can engage in mass action - street protests. That's great, but it does very little economic harm unless they strike. Now they can strike here in America, with no jobs, or they can strike by going home to, admittedly, very poor jobs.

I believe in organized mass action for illegal aliens but too many people on the Left are really just accepting the status quo, which favors capital.
