Vietnam has set a target of sending 80,000 workers abroad in 2007, according to the Overseas Workers Management Department of the Ministry of Labour, War Invalids and Social Affairs (MOLISA).

To this goal, apart from maintaining traditional markets, the MOLISA will work hard to expand its foothold in the Middle East region and explore opportunities in high-income markets, such as Australia and Canada.

The ministry will require localities and labour export businesses to continue improving the training of workers, and strengthen its supervision to prevent violations of labour export regulations.

In 2006, Vietnam sent nearly 79,000 workers abroad, surpassing the yearly target by 5% and increasing 11% over last year's figure.

Malaysia remains the country's largest market with 40,000 Vietnamese guest workers, followed by Taiwan and the Republic of Korea.

Labour exporters also successfully carved a niche in the potential Middle East market, sending 4,600 guest workers to Qatar and Arab Saudi. The success could be attributed to the sector's efforts during the year to improve workers skills. Close cooperated with the countries where Vietnamese workers are working also helped reduce workers' break of contracts remarkably. In Japan, this rate was only 1% by the end of November, the lowest ever.

Policies relating to labour export have been improved, marking by the recent approval of the law on sending Vietnamese workers abroad by the National Assembly which clearly defined the duties of workers and responsibilities of exporters, as well as relevant agencies in protecting workers.

Localities have also opened more training courses to equip workers with not only professional skills but also legal information in order to create a stable and quality labour source for export. (VNA)
