If you are having problems with the Gnutella network, you might just try changing the port number LimeWire uses: Tools -> Options --> Advanced --> Firewall Config --> Listening Port. It is possible that Verizon is just filtering packets on a given port number. If Verizon is actually filtering packets, that is trickier to get around.
If you are a Verizon customer, why don't you call them and ask 'em?
