It is precisely double standards than enrage a lot of people over the issue.

There is a difference when a member of a community criticizes taboos -- see Rushdie -- versus media representing dominance cultures make a similar insult to a different community's icons. At the most prosaic level, Jews can tell Jewish jokes or blacks can tell black jokes, but others who tell the same joke come off as offensive and racist.
