[lbo-talk] legal question

Legal restrictions on campaign contributions have been upheld-- what has been struck down are limits on people or organizations spending money themselves on politics. The nexus of corruption in the transfer of funds to a politician has been used by the courts to justify limits on how much any person or group can give to a politician.

Similarly, the fear of tainting the ballot or cooercing a voter has allowed electioneering restrictions near a polling place that would not be upheld in a public space not near the actual poll.

why are legal restrictions on electioneering within a certain distance of a polling place accepted completely in the US, while legal restrictions on campaign contributions not accepted in most cases? -- Jim Devine Down with Big Brother Bush!
