Why the use of the past-tense? One can still see tibetans kowtowing for miles and miles all the way to the temple. There can be little doubt about the fact that the chinese have devoted a lot of resources to build up the infrastructure of Tibet. That's not to say that they have not at times been brutal. It's a mixed bag. To hear the Hollywood speak, you would think that Tibet had been an independent country that was invaded by China in 1959, instead of having been part of China for hundreds of years. Of course, China has not been exactly the kind of country that a Queer Buddhist Resister (or anybody else here) could feel attracted to either. China is not progressive, has not been for a long time, but it's role in Tibet has not been exclusively negative either.
