I think the marketing was aimed at women -- I haven't see the film. And that is, indeed, the case as I learned later. However, Ang Lee's partner (forgot his name) did say that it was a "chick flick" insofar as its inspiration was "The Bridges of Madison County". I called it "A Fairy to Remember" and "The Gay We Were" because I couldn't think of a riff on "Bridges."
That it was marketed to women makes perfect sense. You aren't going to be anything near a blockbuster if you can't get the market. The point is to tell a story that sells. Surprise surprise surprise that it had the ambiguous ending, yanno?
