According to Bartels, white voters without college degrees rate themselves closer to the Reps on economic issues, and closer to the Dems on abortion and gender issues. There is not a huge reservoir of untapped economic populism out there, at least among white voters (and, as Bartels points out, it's a mistake just to focus on white voters, but lots of people want to).
