Spiritual adviser seeks harmony of faith and work

For a former ad executive, spiritual consulting to businesses is a way of harmonizing work and beliefs.

Kristin Evenson had spent 18 years at the Fallon advertising firm and was a highly paid account director for clients including Nordstrom and Holiday Inn Express when she had an epiphany in 2003.

"God said to quit the job and jump off of this cliff," said Evenson, a 46-year-old single parent.

"Things would take care of themselves."

Nearly 2½ years later, after a period that she calls "miraculous," Evenson has recast herself as a consultant specializing in "integrating the new spiritual essentials with business."

Her Wayzata-based LifeWork Group recently completed its first project, a consulting stint with Interbank in Maple Grove.

Evenson is a member of a new specialty of spiritual advisers making their living from the interplay of religious values and work. Many are corporate chaplains who provide rank-and-filers with a different kind of counseling separate from HR. Others, like Evenson, are aiming their services at the executive offices.

Like others working in Christian outreach, Evenson's pitch to corporate clients has a practical bent: People who feel a spiritual purpose in their work will be more engaged and productive, leading to greater success for the business.
