Internet access booms in Thailand ---------------------------------------- Sunday, January 1, 2006 (Bangkok):
Thailand's government hopes that 50 percent more people will have access to the internet in 2006, with plans to increase bandwidth and deliver more computers to schools.
The Information and Communications Technology Ministry predicted that the number of people with internet access will increase from 12 million to 18 million, the official Thailand News Agency said.
The country has a population of 65 million.
The agency quoted the Minister as saying that the bandwidth and speed of internet access would be increased, and more telephone access lines would be installed in remote areas of the country.
The ministry also plans to deliver 2,50,000 desktop computers to public schools in 2006 and begin providing low-cost laptops in late 2006. (AP)
