Wow, I would not say it better myself. The only thing that I'd add is that such attitudes are carefully cultivated by the US media whose reporting on foreign countries (if any at all) is bascially a morality play along two themes:

Theme 1 - They do not have some of the goodies or freedoms that we do, look how miserabole they are and how much they want be like us. Theme 2 - They introduced some of the goodies or freedoms that we have, look how everyone wants to be like us.

Both themes are variations on the theme of US exceptionalism - "we" are really on the toip of the world, everyone envies us and wants to be like us, USA! USA! USA!.
