God, what a stunningly bad piece Philip Kennicott has written.
I've said here before that I hope the Belarusians rid themselves of the arbitrary and oafish repression of Lukashenko. I'm friendly with some people allied with this Iryna in making that happen. Yet I cannot imagine those people resorting to such facile caricature. The "faceless, brutalized" gray masses with their "military" haircuts conveyed on "rattletrap" buses. Was Kennicott on the bus with them? Too bad if he was. Had he walked he might have passed a couple bog roll queues and people offering to buy his Levis off him.
It would have been relatively easy to write up a fact-and-figure-based indictment of Lukashenkoism. Instead he just offers a bunch of baffling assertions and snorts of 'heh' a la Pugliese.
Kennicott's close reading of local papers is particularly charming (I'm sure his Belarusian and Russian is up to scratch). Does he have any idea as to what the content in his own paper is and what function it served in facilitating an illegal war?
