The discussion of some of Robbie Robertson's lyrics brings to mind this anecdote from Nick Tosches' book on country music (Country:Stein and Day, 1977)

"Steve Young, a country singer born and raised in Alabama, played guitar in the early sixties for a folksy duet called Richard and Jim. Steve first visited California with them, where he attended the wedding of richard and Mimi Fairna at the home of Joan Baez, who is Mimi's older sister. Steve recalls that Baez, butterfly of egalitarianism and wet-dream queen of liberals everywhere was quite repulsed by the presence of a white Southern man. The deplacement of hatreds is a droll thing." (p. 137)
