Relatedly, in US history women were only in the last 2-3 centuries even 
considered moral leaders. Men were supposed to be the moral leaders in the 
family because women were prone consorting with the devil. See John Demos 
in, uh, can't think of the titleof the book at the moment -- it's about the 
family in the colonial era in the US.
