Unless you count MTV's "The Real World" as a proto-reality show (which I don't, not really, it didn't use hidden cameras and the participants knew when they were being filmed), arguably the first reality show was "Big Brother", which is pure European and was invented by Endemol of the Netherlands. Reality shows have always been very popular in Europe; people only think of them as American because they're vulgar.
Actually, even if you count "The Real World", it was predated by "Sylvania Waters" which was a coproduction between the BBC and an Australian network.
