from SLATE (the WaPo's on-line news mag): The Major US Newpspapers all >mention ... that the wide margin of victory for the party that is considered a terrorist group by Israel, the United States, and the European Union puts into doubt the future of any kind of peace negotiations. ... The big question now is whether Hamas will become more moderate now that it is part of a legitimate government. ... The New York Times points out that with the victory of Hamas, Israel is now likely to just forget about peace talks and will simply act unilaterally to pursue its goals. ... USA Today notes that some have compared the election results to the Taliban's rule over Afghanistan, with Benjamin Netanyahu declaring that "today, Hamastan was formed."... <

but Israel has been acting "unilaterally to pursue its goals" for several years. (What is Sharonism all about?) And the left has been saying for much longer that those goals involve creating Palestinian bantustans. So we shouldn't be surprised. -- Jim Devine "The price one pays for pursuing any profession or calling is an intimate knowledge of its ugly side." -- James Baldwin
