"Fragments of the bodies of two militants were found on the scene of the explosion. Basayev's body has been identified through some of the fragments, including his head," Aushev said.

"On the whole the situation has already been stabilized in many aspects, but the position of the regional leadership will strengthen even more after the killing of this notorious figure," Nikonov told Interfax on Monday.
"The only influence such news might have on the G8 summit is that the leaders of the world's leading countries will congratulate Vladimir Putin on the killing of a major international terrorist and terrorist number one in Russia, Shamil Basayev," he said.

"This day can be considered the logical end of the tough struggle against illegal paramilitary formations, which has been waged by federal troops and law enforcement agencies," Alkhanov said.
Basayev got what he deserved for the bloody crimes he perpetrated in the past 15 years, he said.

July 10 (Interfax) - The killing of notorious warlord Shamil Basayev is retaliation he deserved for killing Beslan children and perpetrating other terrorist acts, President Vladimir Putin said following a Monday report by Federal Security Service Director Nikolai Patrushev.
Patrushev reported that Basayev was killed in a special operation in Ingushetia in the early morning hours of Monday.
"This is retaliation he deserves for killing our children in Beslan, Budennovsk, all the terrorist acts his bandits perpetrated in Moscow and other regions of Russia, including Ingushetia and the Chechen Republic," he said.
Putin ordered Patrushev to nominate for awards the security service agents who conducted the special operation.
