KUALA LUMPUR, July 14 (Reuters) - Exxon Mobil Corp. (XOM.N: Quote, Profile, Research) said on Friday it had begun operations at its $244 million Guntong E gas platform in the South China Sea, as part of its efforts to meet growing gas demand in Malaysia.

The platform, located 210 km (130 miles) off the east coast of peninsular Malaysia in waters 64 metre (210 ft) deep, is the first phase of the Guntong Hub development, expected to produce and process a total of more than 4 trillion cubic feet of gas for sale on the peninsular, the U.S. major oil company said in a statement.

"Guntong E, together with the two existing Guntong D production and compression platforms, will have a combined gas handling capacity of more than 800 million cubic feet of gas per day," it added.

Malaysian unit ExxonMobil Production and Exploration Malaysia Inc. and state oil firm Petronas each holds a 50 percent interest in the gas production sharing contract under which the platform was developed, the statement said.
