Le Monde Diplomatique had a similar article a long while ago about the origins of the mad cow desease showing what treatment were given the cattle and how that would affect their ability at resisting illness (issue that was addressed by feeding them huge amounts of antibiotics, which reminded me a scene in the movie "Seven").
