India condemns Israel, Lebanon hostility Thursday, July 27, 2006

NEW DELHI: India has strongly condemned Isreal's bombings in Lebanon and has not spared Hezbollah for capturing two Israeli soldiers. Anand Sharma, junior Foreign Minister, stated the disproportionate and excessive use of force in Lebanon which has become a "victim by default" and demanded an immediate cessation of hostilities, in the Parliament.

The issue came into purview when Basudeb Acharia, the leader of Communist Party of India, criticized the Congress led government for not recating [sic] to Israel's bombardments on Lebanon. He described it as "a full-scale assault [in] brazen violation of international law and the Geneva Conventions."

The Indian Foreign Ministry had earlier called on Israel and Lebanon and had stated that India condemns the actions of both countries and requested them to "eschew violence, de-escalate the situation, and return to the path of negotiations."
