The World Bank will provide a preferential loan of US $70 million to a project to develop health care services in the Mekong Delta.

An agreement to this effect was signed in Hanoi on July 24 by Le Duc Thuy, Governor of the State Bank of Vietnam (SBV), and Klaus Rohland, World Bank Country Director for Vietnam.

With an estimated cost of US $85 million, the heath care development project will also receive US $5 million, in non-refundable aid, from the Japanese Government and US $ 10 million from the Vietnamese Government.

The project will be implemented in 13 provinces and cities of the region, and at the Can Tho Polyclinic and the Can Tho Medical-Pharmaceutical University.

It aims to improve quality and capacity of hospital services, to raise the efficiency of the preventive medical system, to train personnel for the medical sector, and particularly, to assist treatment services for underprivileged people.

Addressing the signing ceremony, the SBV Governor expressed his hope that the project will help Vietnam gradually improve the medical system and quality of medical services in the Mekong Delta.

He said the project is expected to facilitate access to high-quality medical services for locals, especially poor ones, in the Mekong Delta.

The Mekong Delta comprises of 12 provinces of Long An, Tien Giang, Ben Tre, Vinh Long, Tra Vinh, Hau Giang, Soc Trang, Dong Thap, An Giang, Kien Giang, Bac Lieu and Ca Mau, and Can Tho city. (VNA)
