Before the reception, Blair's only views of San Francisco on Saturday had been from his limousine in the motorcade that brought him to the city and from his hotel room window. From the time he arrived on his British Airways charter at 5:30 p.m. Friday until Saturday's reception, Blair was holed up at the Fairmont Hotel, working on his Tuesday speech to the World Affairs Council in Los Angeles and handling his government's affairs at long distance.
"I know you don't believe me, but (Blair) really doesn't have anything scheduled Saturday before the reception,'' said Lorraine Turner, a British government spokeswoman, earlier in the day. "He won't be visiting Alcatraz, and he won't be doing a wine tasting. He's being prime minister.''
