June 6 (Reuters) - International Business Machines Corp. (IBM.N: Quote, Profile, Research), the world's largest computer services firm, said on Tuesday it would invest nearly $6 billion in India over a 3-year period.

Armonk, New York-based IBM has 42,000 staff in Asia's third-largest economy, up from 4,900 four years ago, and is already the biggest multinational employer in the country.

Its workforce in India is the firm's largest outside the United States.

Underlining the importance of India to his company, IBM Chief Executive Samuel Palmisano is holding his annual briefing for analysts in Bangalore, the country's silicon valley. The meeting has never before been held outside the United States.

Following are some facts about IBM's operations in India.

-- IBM started operations in India in 1992.

-- The firm has made India a global delivery hub for its software needs and client servicing.

-- IBM has operations in 14 Indian cities and its network of 2,500 business partners covers 40 cities.

-- IBM is the largest multinational software services exporter from India.

-- Nearly half of its staff strength in India, 20,000 employees, work in its backoffice unit IBM Daksh. IBM acquired Daksh in 2004, when the unit had 6,000 people on its rolls.

-- About 16,000 IBM employees work out of Bangalore.

-- India is one of the six countries to host an IBM research lab. The unit employs 100 out of the total 3,000 spread across the globe.

-- During the first quarter, IBM's business in India grew 61 percent compared to the same period a year ago, the fastest among emerging economies including Brazil, China and Russia.

-- IBM's biggest customer in India is top mobile services provider Bharti Airtel Ltd. (BRTI.BO: Quote, Profile, Research). In 2004 IBM signed a 10-year, $750-million deal to manage New Delhi-based Bharti's core IT infrastructure.

-- Other clients include Yes Bank Ltd. (YESB.BO: Quote, Profile, Research) and Titan Industries Ltd. (TITN.BO: Quote, Profile, Research).

-- To grow its Indian business, IBM is focusing on the telecoms, automotive, financial services and governmental sectors.

-- In the software services sector, IBM competes mainly with the top three Indian technology firms -- Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. (TCS.BO: Quote, Profile, Research), Infosys Technologies Ltd. (INFY.BO: Quote, Profile, Research) and Wipro Ltd. (WIPR.BO: Quote, Profile, Research).
