As you may know, Stalin used a "unite and conquer" strategy to cement his control over multiethnic areas. A lot of the contemporary ethnic and territorial conflicts in the former Soviet Union are a result of this. For instance, eastern Ukraine was glued onto Western Ukraine by Stalin. Ditto Transdniestr and Moldova. South Ossetia and Abkhazia were grafted onto Georgia by the Bolsheviks, despite the fact that Ossetians, Georgians, and Abkhaz have hated each other for thousands of years. This meant that there would always be conflicts in these areas that only Moscow would be able to mediate/keep from bloodshed. And now that they're "independent..."
