Also, one should not underestimate the mobilizing potential of anti-semitic ressentiments in the general American population.
The United States have retained Israel thus far as a loyal vassal, but if the relation of forces in the middle east ever reaches the crisis point where the U.S. is compelled to ditch Israel, the ruling class in the U.S. would find a pogrom very handy.
By raising the Palestine issue now, American leftists can help to lay the groundwork for that pogrom when it comes, rather than wasting their time on, say, the shameless militarization of the U.S. southern border, the American prison-industrial complex, lack of health insurance for most Americans, and other issues secondary to Palestine.
