situation in dem primaries is similar to that for minor parties more generally, 'important' challenges have generally come from independent candidates in last half century rather than established organizations, process involves self-selection whereby an individual either forms an electoral vehicle (and sometimes calls it a party) or gloms onto an already existing party (whose members often naively believe that their org will benefit from association with a 'name'), same things for primaries where a well known person or an activist throws proverbial hat into the ring and runs for office, organization of such campaigns varies greatly, rarely does an on-going group emerge from such efforts...
hstorically, most 'successful' minor party/primary 'insurgency' efforts have occurred when demographic changes were occurring in composition of the actual electorate... michael
