didn't Gore try a populist strategy for awhile in 2000, until the DLC types pulled on his leash? I'm told that the strategy worked in terms of the polls (I don't keep track of polls, so I can't say for sure). Jim Devine <<<<<>>>>>

dlc claimed he didn't respond when it pulled his chain (btw: did al-bore actually kick dlc head honcho *al from* off his campaign plane or is that urban legend), in any event, don't recall any polling data indicating that bore's periodic and comparatively mild 'populism' affected public opinion of group - males, and more specifically, white ones - that dlc covets, i do recall *al from* complaining that gore's populism had hurt him among male voters, but election data do not bear him out, percentage of both male and white males voter for recent dem prez candidates has been about the same...

Male Voters 1996: Clinton 43% Dole 42% Perot 10% 2000: Gore 42% Bush 53% Nader 3% 2004: Kerry 44% Bush 55%

White Male Voters 1996: Clinton 38% Dole 49% Perot 11% 2000: Gore 36% Bush 60% Nader 3% 2004: Kerry 37% Bush 62%

what ought to be troubling for dems is that voters with less than $30K/yr - majority of whom vote dem - comprised 34% of actual electorate in 1996, but only 23% in both 2000 & 2004, while percentage of voters with more than $75K/yr - majority of whom vote rep - comprised 18% in 1996, 28% in 2000, and 32% in 2004... mh
