The Vietnamese Government highly appreciates the role and support given by U.S software giant Microsoft in the past, and hopes to further foster the cooperation with the corporation in information technology (IT), stressed Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Khiem.

Deputy PM Khiem made the remarks when receiving Mr. Saw Ken Wye, President for South East Asia of Microsoft Corp., in Ha Noi on March 2.

As IT is one of the seven priorities established by Vietnamese Government, Viet Nam is looking for support from foreign companies and organizations, especially giants such as Microsoft, added Khiem.

Microsoft is now carrying out some big projects in Viet Nam in an effort to help it narrow its IT gap with other countries, namely the cooperation programme with the Ministry of Education and Training of Viet Nam on providing IT knowledge for schoolteachers.

Microsoft also helps those who have average income to access IT as well as assists Vietnamese enterprises to improve their competitiveness by using IT and contributes to the development of Viet Nam's software industry.

During the previous year, Microsoft has doubled its staff and office usage in Viet Nam, thus proving the corporation is enjoying sound development, said Saw.

The corporation sees Viet Nam as a potential environment for IT and hopes to set up a software creative centre in Ho Chi Minh City soon. Microsoft has agreed to sponsor an information gate for Viet Nam when it hosts the APEC Summit in 2006, added Saw.
