The "classical Athenian village" was a peasant democracy, freed from all external obligations. It was an intellectual force in a number of ways. (1) It was the basis of the social & intellectual importance of _techne_ (i.e. the concept which transformed by Socrates/Plato became the core of the doctrine of politics confined to an elite) (b) it was the foudation of political strength Athenian democracy, and (c) because of (b) triggered the hatred of democracy which informs Plato's thought.
