One of the world's leading mobile phone makers, Motorola, set up a new research and development (R&D) center on Friday in Hangzhou, capital of east China's Zhejiang Province.

Motorola has set up 17 R&D centers with more than 1,800 employees in China since the first was established in 1993.

"The new R&D Center enhances China's position in Motorola's global R&D network," said Mark Borota, senior vice president and general manager of cellular networks for Motorola Networks at the opening ceremony held in the high-tech industry development zone in Hangzhou.

The Hangzhou R&D center was designed to provide Chinese operators with local access to Motorola's comprehensive network technologies as well as to promote the growth of China's wireless communications industry by tapping local talent and driving network innovation, said Simon Leung, regional president of Motorola Asia Pacific.

The new R&D center plans to recruit a large number of engineers this year and expects to hire more over the next two years, said Simon Leung. Multinationals have increased their investment in R&D centers in China as the market here becomes more important in their global business strategy. Motorola announced in 2001 that it would make China its global center for R&D and manufacturing. Its total investment of in China has exceeded 3.6 billion U. S. dollars, of which about 500 million has been spent on R&D.
