The debate on whether or not El Gran Paro would be a good tactic showed a political division among the Mexican and other immigrant community leaders. Those who organized yesterday's boycott, like Nativo López (interviewed by Sarah Knopp at <http://mrzine.monthlyreview.org/knopp270406.html>), are the left wing of the leadership, many of them (like López) probably influenced by earlier generations of immigrant radicals like Bert Corona. It was a great success yesterday: "More than 1 million mostly Hispanic immigrants and their supporters skipped work and took to the streets Monday, flexing their economic muscle in a nationwide boycott that succeeded in slowing or shutting many farms, factories, markets and restaurants" (at <http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/immigration_boycott_day;_ylt=ArUwpD6IEh.stARc2xJHCgSs0NUE;_ylu=X3oDMTA2Z2szazkxBHNlYwN0bQ-->). Hopefully, that success will raise the standing of left-wingers in Mexican and other immigrant communities, allowing them to move the communities to the left.
