I think the problem that they are facing is: conservatives have already 
played it, and it works.  SO there's a bit of "Oh, I'm Christian ... I 
guess I should hang out with the ones who talk about God" -- so saying 
"I talk about God, too!" isn't all that lothesome.

As Stephen Colbert would say: we're a Christian country!  It says it 
right there on the dollar bill!

(except it's largely true)
