John Thornton:

What level of violence is necessary for a crime to be labeled violent?

If I run into a liquor store with my hand in my pocket and tell the clerk to give me the till is that a violent crime? According to the DOJ it is. While I won't argue it isn't monumentally stupid I will argue it isn't violent.

[WS:] By the same logic, if I tell a woman on a remote parking lot to spread her legs, for otherwise I'll beat the living shit out of her, and she does - no crime, either violent or otherwise has been committed. We just had "consensual" sex.

Justin: Most prisoners are just poor suckers who need a lawyer.

[WS:] To expand on this thought, most criminals are poor suckers who hoped to profit at someone else's expense, but got caught and could not manage to get a good lawyer. I do not see why they should deserve any more sympathy than their more successful cousins, capitalists and corporate executives, who both, profit at someone else's expense and manage to get adequate legal representation. That is, unless it is someone you know, which is a different story.
