[lbo-talk] The country that wouldn't grow up

I was really surprised to see this, especially the first version of Judt's piece, which was originally published by the NY Times. Ever since Mearsheimer and Walt published their LRB piece, scores of liberal intellectuals are coming out of the closet as Israel critics.

What I find annoying about such pieces is that they are all being heralded as indicative of a new sensibility about Israel triggered by the Mearsheimer/Walt article. I think the better way to frame this is that M/W's piece was indicative of an overcoming of taboos about speaking critically of Israel in liberal intellectual circles, and now, many of their kin are feeling freer to speak up like they did.
