There is no question monotheism is usually presented in the West as an advance in human thinking tantamount to the introduction of the scientific method. This does not make any sense, since the monotheistic POV invariably results in envisioning a unitary manic-depressive God given to psychotic swings of creation and destruction. The Book of Job, e.g., offers an especially monstrous picture of the monotheistic God as an insane, unreasoning, insecure tyrant -- no one you'd ever want to know, let alone worship. I think monotheistic religions basically boil down to reverence for mental illness on a cosmic scale. Their appeal is lost on me.
