It's a pretty large minority. About 15-20% of the
population is Muslim, at least nominally. The Russian
Orthodox Church and the main Muslim organizations have
a pretty close relationship. I think the closest US
parallel would be the relationship between Protestants
and Catholics -- there are individuals who really
dislike the other faith, but on the whole they tend to
be on the same page. Many Orthodox think they have a
lot more in common with Islam than with Western
Christianity. ;) Islam is a native Russian religion,
while Catholicism, for instance, is seen as foreign
and alien (and Polish! Yuck!).
