Yoshie: Can't you see the difference between a _state_ measure targeted against _a despised minority_ (like a hijab ban, an English-only bill, Japanese internment, Mexican deportation, etc. to take examples from the past as well as the present) and a country's dominant religious group (the orthodox), teaming up with a minority group (Muslims), to express its silly view? ---

It's a pretty large minority. About 15-20% of the population is Muslim, at least nominally. The Russian Orthodox Church and the main Muslim organizations have a pretty close relationship. I think the closest US parallel would be the relationship between Protestants and Catholics -- there are individuals who really dislike the other faith, but on the whole they tend to be on the same page. Many Orthodox think they have a lot more in common with Islam than with Western Christianity. ;) Islam is a native Russian religion, while Catholicism, for instance, is seen as foreign and alien (and Polish! Yuck!).

Nu, zayats, pogodi!
