The reason this is funny is that before SUVs, the stereotype about Porsche drives was exactly the same one you cite for SUVs. The old joke:
"What is the difference between a Porsche and a Porcupine?"
"In a Porcupine the pricks are on the outside."
It was not universal of course, but I suspect the same "central tendency applied". Living in California in the seventies, if you saw a Porsche on the road there was good chance the driver would drive faster than the flow of traffic, often by weaving in or out or driving the shoulder. You could be pretty damn sure the driver would do something antisocial to endanger everybody else on the road. Too long ago for me t he know where to find marketing surveys. But I have lost of friends who can provide anecdotal evidence. And suspect a look at Porsche ads of the period would show a high asshole appeal.
No I'm not calling you names. Central tendencies, as I said before, don't apply to everyone. But in the Seventies, the Porsche was a major choice of assholes.
