it's also worth taking a look at sharlet's intro to a reposting of part of this article on the revealer:

<http://www.therevealer.org/archives/main_story_002694.php>

excerpt: "If the story is true, Ted's a hypocrite of the worst kind; then again, he's also another victim of the very closet over which he publicly stands guard, as are all the New Life church members he's led into it. That story may not make the mainstream media. Indeed, it seems unlikely that Ted's downfall will be reported with any more nuance than that of Mark Foley's political collapse. Sex, it seems, blinds the press to politics."

i've found it interesting through this whole thing that there seems not to be much discussion of the politics of people like haggard (and foley?) as themselves lifelong (it would seem) victims of the very culture they themselves perpetrate and perpetuate. or, put it the other way, as perpetrating and perpetuating the very culture of which they themselves are victims. talk about false consciousness. there is some serious self-hatred going on here, and they take it out, it would seem, on the rest of the world. maybe as a form of expiation.
