Would you be able to pass the same tests you suggest for animals for the presence of suffering? The question is not without precedent --- Skinner seemed to think that people had a bad habit of anthropomorphizing humans.
Just to clarify, do you think that suffering exists only in humans -- that outside of that, you cannot torture a dog any more than you can torture a grapefruit?
