The Technology Centre for Bomb and Mine Disposal of Vietnam's Ministry of Defence (BOMICEN) and the Vietnam Veterans of America Foundation (VVAF) signed on November 10 an agreement which calls for the implementation of Phase II of the "Vietnam UXO/Landmine Impact Assessment and Survey." According to a press release from the US embassy in Hanoi, the project, funded by the US Department of State with nearly US $1.1 million, will map out and evaluate the impact of, and selectively remove unexploded ordnance and landmines that remain in the Vietnamese soil and injure Vietnamese civilians.
During Phase I of the project, BOMICEN and VVAF carried out surveys in 344 of 549 communes in the three provinces of Ha Tinh, Quang Binh and Quang Tri, clearing more than 421 hectares of land, locating and destroying 6,250 items of UXO and landmines. Phase II of the project, scheduled to finish on Aug. 31, 2007, will complete the work in the remaining communes of these three provinces and extend into Nghe An and Thua Thien-Hue provinces.
Addressing the signing ceremony, US Ambassador to Hanoi, Michael W. Marine, said that the close cooperation between BOMICEN and VVAF will allow a greater good to be achieved together combining social science, data collection and data analysis with the highly demanding and dangerous work of explosive ordnance disposal.
