Not only is TV fun, but there's a lot of -good- tv on these days. Before I moved to reno where I have no tv, I watched:

-the passive aggressive news hour on comedy central (stewart and colbert) -brilliant and subversive comedies like arrested development, the simpsons, american dad -sorta cheesy, sorta awesome primetime soap opera Lost -the last couple years' crop of hbo dramas have been mostly very good (Rome, Sopranos) and at times of singular brilliance (the wire and deadwood).

The Wire alone is worth a cable bill. The best show in the history of television and of importance for any leftist in urban postindustrial america. If no one on this list is familiar with Omar Little the gay robin hood of the projects, and Brother "the most dangerous thing in america is a nigga with a library card" Muzone, then what a shame for the cause of socialism in the usa.

I probably watch a little too much tv, but it correlates with working too much. And if we are in the business of engaging politically and culturally with the proles who work too much to make the world spin, is it wise to consciously wall ourselves off from that which unites them? Television is the medium of our age.
