The sixth European Jazz Festival 2006, a playground gathering Jazz artists of Vietnam and Europe, will be held in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City from November 28 to December 9.

The sixth European Jazz Festival will see the performance of six European bands from Denmark, Wallonia-Brussels (Belgium), France, Sweden, Luxembourg, and Finland.

The Vietnamese band La Do from the Military University of Culture and Arts will join hands with the Danish band Swing Sisters for a performance in Hanoi.

Kari Alank, Ambassador of the Republic of Finland and Markus Cornaro Ambassador, Head of Delegation of the European Commission to Vietnam said "We are delighted to see that the European Jazz Festival has proven itself a steady favourite on the annual cultural calendar in Vietnam. This is probably because the language of jazz - simple but quintessential, straightforward but genuine - requires no interpretation. Breaking down all languages and cultural barriers, jazz reaches the soul of audiences, here as well as in Europe, so it is actively promoting cultural exchange and involving people from the full spectrum of Vietnamese society."

"Together with many other distinguished cultural events brought to Vietnam by the Embassies of EU Member States and the Delegation of the European Commission , the European Jazz Festival is a flagship and prime example of the richness and breadth of EU-Vietnam relations, which far transcend the political, commercial and cooperation spheres."

Through five festivals, the European Jazz Festival has become a cultural event of strong attraction to people in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh. Jazz, a traditionally urban art form, has a long history of openness and has successfully integrated musical influences from different cultures. The European Jazz Festival's success is manifested by the constant rise in the number of audiences - nearly 6,000 people came to the 5th edition in 2005. The event also helps popularise Vietnamese Jazz.

During this year's festival, apart from official performance to take place in Youth Theatre, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City Conservatory of Music, the European artists will join local counterparts for jazz sessions which passionately embrace jazz tones. In Hanoi, these will take place at the Jazz Club and the Sofitel Plaza's Summit Lounge, and in Ho Chi Minh City at the Sax's.

The sixth European Jazz Festival, which is organised by the Delegation of European Commission to Vietnam and the Vietnam Ministry of Culture and Information, is hoped to bring the wonderful moments of entertainment to Vietnamese and international jazz fans alike.

Admission is free. Tickets can be reserved and collected from 22 November 2006 onwards at: Hanoi: the Performing Arts Agency, 16 Hoe Nhai, telephone: 927 40 94 and Ho Chi Minh City: the Conservatory of Music, 112 Nguyen Du, telephone: 8243774
