But Toland's cinematography is different when he works with Wyler than when he works with Welles. The camera is positioned differently and Welles and Wyler used a different array of lenses.

Or take Sven Nykvist. His work for Polanski on THE TENANT is very different from his work for Bergman. In each case, the world view the audience encounters is that of the director and not the cinematographer.

The Coen Brothers are writer/directors.

Mancini's scores, etc.

But is Hepburn's acting, Head's costumes or Mancini's scores the controlling vision of a film? Mancini's scores serve the vision of Blake Edwards, not the other way around.

But if the director is not the controlling vision in a Hitchcock film or a Hawks film or a Mankiewicz film, why is there such internal consistency in the work of these artists? Why do Bergman films have such a strong relationship to each other when Bergman used several different cinematographers over the course of his career?
