[In her apologetics for Iran, Yoshie has often pointed to the new law banning abortion in Nicaragua, as evidence that this is what the masses want, and this is what leftist governments often do. Apparently it is not what Nicaraguans want, however. And they seem fed up with the church's influence on politics, too.]

Also in Nicaragua, yesterday’s Washington Post highlighted efforts by abortion rights advocates to overturn a new law banning abortion. A recent Greenberg Quinlan Rosner survey finds that they have public opinion on their side: about 70 percent of Nicaraguans oppose the law.

The law bans all abortions, including in the cases of rape, incest, and when the mother’s health is at risk. It was approved in the run- up to the recent elections and promoted heavily by the Catholic Church.

In supporting the law, Nicaragua politicians largely deferred to the Church. But 4 of 5 Nicaraguans think the Church has too much influence in Nicaragua, the poll shows.

Below are results from our survey, which included interviews with 1,000 randomly selected adults from throughout Nicaragua from August 28 - September 2.
