We all know, of course, how the Shah butchered all the Marxists he could get his hands on; after all, that's the reason the CIA overthrew Mossadegh and installed him. And the reason the Islamists ended up in power is they were the last opposition standing; by ramping up the police state violence, SAVAK could succeed in killing off the entire national supply of Communists, Socialists, labor union types, etc., but in a country whose most revered heroes are religious martyrs, to murder all the preachers was like sweeping the ocean back with a broom; every time one went down for inveighing against the monarchy, three more heroes jumped up to take his place.

But I don't know anything about the revolutionary Islamic government persecuting Socialists. Not that it would surprise me a bit, them being religious fundamentalists. Who can tell me more about this? Pugliese?
