Given that US troops are all occupied in Iraq, I think this is a perfect opportunity for Canada to put into practice its long-planned "Drang nach Suden" agenda. Canadian tanks will soon stream southward across the border, the Maple Leaf will fly above the White House, and America will cower beneath the iron-heeled, blood-soaked Canadian jackboot.

First they have to buy some tanks. ======================== Scoff, all of you, scoff.

But inter-imperialist war could be looming in North America.

Global warming promises to turn the Northwest Passage into an important commercial waterway providing access to Canada's abundant resources for China and other nations. Canada has forcefully asserted its claim to these Arctic waters, consistent with the UN convention on the law of the sea. The US has angrily rejected the claim.

An arms race has begun. The Harper government has announced its intention to build and deploy three armed icebreakers to defend its claim. In response, the US National Research Council, comparing the Northwest Passage to the Strait of Hormuz, has called on the Bush administration to add two military icebreakers to its fleet.

Rumours that the Canadians are trying to reach agreement on a mutual security pact with the Duchy of Grand Fenwick have not been verified.
