A couple of reasons.
1. Lenin, like Yeltsin, is viewed as a destroyer who didn't build anything. Whereas Stalin (like Putin) built (is building) something.
2. Soviet people had a very whitewashed version of Bolshevik history, so hearing that, e.g., Lenin ordered mass executions ar whatever is very shocking to them. They already knew all that about Stalin. ;)
Stalin's popularity has always been pretty high, despite the Secret Speech and 50 years of anti-Stalin government statements and activity. In 1956, there were huge pro-Stalin riots in Georgia after the Secret Speech that left several people dead.
