lol @ "increasingly."

the new metal memes blow my mind. i recently saw a resurgence of "thinking man's metal" too! [and strangely, from ben ratliff, who is on the whole a very keen critic of weird and extreme musics.] yet there's a liberal folkie strawman overdetermining the nature and content of political music. as ned sublette put it in his interview with doug, this "pamphletismo" really holds in some groups, even though the music is often bad, and lamely propagandistic.

so while metal may never regain the mass audience it had with metallica, or even pantera, it's unecessarily ghettoized as stupid and juvenile, or as a high art form [in the case of Southern Lord acts Sunn 0))) and Boris...and to a lesser extent US black metal artists like Xasthur and Nachtmystium.]

[incidentally, environmentalists should be all over the new Gojira album.]

cheers, jt.
